Gum Health

Periodontics (oral hygiene) involves the care and treatment of gums and the prevention of gum diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis.  These are serious oral infections, which if left untreated, can lead to bleeding, swollen gums, bad breath and possible tooth loss.

Gingivitis is the mildest form of gum disease (although it is still very damaging to your teeth).  Gingivitis is caused by inadequate brushing and flossing of your teeth, which then leads to plaque build up.  The bacteria that live in plaque are a major irritation to the gums and cause oral infection.  When your body launches an immune response to fight the infection, the gums become inflamed. People with gingivitis usually have very little oral discomfort.  Therefore, it is of prime importance to recognize the symptoms, such as swollen, red gums that bleed easily.

Periodontitis is an advanced bacterial infection that affects both gums and the bone supporting the teeth. Untreated gingivitis often leads to periodontitis.  With time the plaque and bacteria spreads and begins to grow below the gum line.  Toxins produced by the bacteria further irritate the gums.  The toxins stimulate an immune response which causes the body to turn on itself, destroying the tissues and bone that support the teeth.  This causes our gums to separate from the teeth forming spaces that become badly infected.

As the disease progresses, more gum tissue and bone are destroyed.
Eventually, teeth can become loose and may have to be removed.
There are warning signs for periodontal disease which you should
look out for.  These include, but are not limited to:

  • Swollen, sore gums which are red in color
  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Gums that have separated from the teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • Chronic bad breath

Bad breath has a number of causes including poor oral hygiene,
smoking and drinking habits.  If you are experiencing bad breath,
we may be able to offer treatment or advice that can help you.  If you notice symptoms that could signal gingivitis or periodontitis, schedule an appointment with us to begin your oral hygiene treatment program.
